'A Midsummer Night's Dream'
Saturday 17th June 2017

A Midsummerr Night's Dream
“Ill met by moonlight” it may be, but on a summer evening on a grassy bank under a tree against a backdrop of ancient Cotswold stone, with a glass of wine in your hand and the promise of another at half-time, what could go wrong? And it didn’t.
The annual Filkins Theatre rehearsed reading cranked into action: with a little help from Mr Shakespeare’s lords, ladies, lovers, mechanicals, and fairies of the forest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was underway. And however hard Lysander might complain that ‘true love never did run smooth’, everyone could enjoy the happy certainty that he would be proved wrong.
Theseus and his court could never have sounded so magisterial, the lovers were lovely (was Hermia ever better cast?). Puck skipped lithely, Titania swooned, Oberon pottered in his dressing gown. Moon shone, Lion roared, Bottom in a toga perfectly matched Flute in his skirt.
Once again this creaking troupe of thespians (accompanied by the essential costumier, property mistress, music maestro, greasepainter, bar staff and the rest), had hurled themselves into a frenzy of two or three gentle, grape-fueled rehearsals. Once again the advancing ripeness of their years brought its own sweet charm (well, that’s their story, anyway.) Once again our Great Director had pulled it off. Congratulations.
Villagers disporting for a village audience on the village green: for this evening hour at least, everybody there seemed united as players in the greater play, truly A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

A review of the year
It has been a very good year with a variety of productions culminating in a very successful evening in remembrance of John Cambridge with ‘The Cambridge Footnotes’ which included a variety of well received sketches including:
The Model Ambassador
Three Little Maids (from the Mikado)
There Ain't Nothing like a Dame
The evening was well attended and enjoyed by all, with many fond and wonderful memories revived of John and his performances. Grateful thanks are also due to Jeremy Irwin Singer for his marvellous production of ‘A Midsummers Night’s Dream’ held in the Paddock at Filkins on a balmy evening in June. The setting and weather could not have been more perfect with many wonderful performances from the actors. An event enjoyed by many in what was a quintessential Cotswold evening.
Thanks also to Richard Martin who put on earlier in the year Supper & Theatrical Games, again an event well attended where we were all treated to a scrumptious supper and entertainment in many forms.
Next year's events proposed are a One Act Play due to take place in May, so watch for further details to follow in due course. This will take place in Filkins Village Hall and tickets can be obtained from the Cotswold Woollen Weavers and Shop and Post Office. Filkins Theatre are also intending to support a Children’s Theatre aiming to take place on 23rd and 24th July 2018 so if anyone would like to assist with this please contact me.
