'Filkins Junior Theatre Workshop'

FILKINS JUNIOR THEATRE WORKSHOP

It would be safe to say, I think, that our workshop was a success. On Sunday 10th October at 10.00am, 15 eager aspiring thespians gathered (with their sandwiches) in Filkins Village Hall for a ‘production experience’. With Michael Schultz in charge, the day began with a look at ‘the lights’. The children learned what an important part lighting played in any production and were encouraged to ‘have a go,’ which they all did with great panache!

Next Pat Scott gave a short talk on ‘producing and directing’, with a view to choosing ‘volunteers’ to direct a short production. Pam Assiter then told the group the storyline of the play and explained how music could contribute to a production. Andy Hoad astounded us with, among other special effects, the explosion of a small, but extremely noisy ‘bomb!’

After juice and biscuits, we trooped over the road to inspect the costumes stored in the Parish Rooms. We found some suitable garments for our play and, what luck, a donkey’s head!

Three directors were chosen and they in turn chose a cast. A minimum of words were written and rehearsals began, after lunch, for, yes, you’ve guessed it, ‘A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream’, or, in our case, ‘A Midsummer Nightmare’.

We began with the Duke of Athens, then Oberon, Titania, Puck and attendants and of course, the Artisans and their play, ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’ to finish.

The adults were very impressed with the directors, their ideas and their confidence - and potential stars emerged. I mention no names as all the members of the group took part (no shrinking violets here!)

After intensive rehearsals, the group performed for the parents at 3.00 pm. Judging by the applause and the eagerness of the group, yes, the workshop was a success. Roll on our next Junior Theatre production!
