FILKINS CHILDREN'S THEATRE:

"The Treasure of Filthy Lucre"

There were 20 children on stage, between ages of 6 and 13 and it was a delight to watch them. They knew what they are doing and they so wholeheartedly enjoyed it, from the swashbuckling pirates and the cabin boys to the sultry sirens and the dusky maidens. A little cameo too from the ‘deserted wives’, bemoaning the shortcomings of men - Sarah-Jane Poole and Hannah Phillipson. We had a handsome Squire Trelawney (Sam Greenhalgh);  the suitably macho pirates were led by the Ashforth-Smith brothers and the ‘musical children’ led by Scheming Monica - Abigail Schultz. Much doubling went on, all well disguised by the wonderfully varied costumes - and the wigs!!!  It was great fun, and wittily written by Linda Young - a pity that we missed some of the ‘bon mots’ in the delivery, but there were laughs galore and spirited  singing and dancing. When I hear ‘Clementine’ played in the future, I’ll think of “Filthy Lucre, Filthy Lucre”! A happy ending of course, and a new life ahead for Mrs Trelawney with Big Chief Wolla Wolla (Kate Sylvester) on their tropical island.

Among the production team were Mike Clark and Andy Hoad - scenery and music; Mike Schultz in charge of lighting; and the costumes by Jane Martin. After the Show, Pam Assiter, the producer, was presented with flowers; she accepted them, but only on behalf of the whole team!

The children’s songs are being compiled on cassette. A copy will be sent to the Ugandan School of Nyakatakura. The cassette will be on sale for £1.50,  all proceeds to the School. Contact Sue Ashforth-Smith.
